Sports field & court lighting design

A court, a practice field, and a stadium have different lighting needs. Start with the sport, the level of play, and the way the space will be used.

Define the activity before the fixture

Share the dimensions of the playing surface and identify the sport or activities. Recreational use, training, and competitive events may have different project requirements. Include spectator areas and circulation paths when they are part of the scope.

Avoid choosing a fixture count from field size alone. Pole position, mounting height, beam distribution, and aiming all influence the result. Lighting should be reviewed across the playing area rather than only at its center.

Balance coverage and visual comfort

Players track moving objects and look in many directions. Fixture placement and aiming should be considered with those viewing angles in mind. A bright installation can still be uncomfortable when the light source falls in a critical line of sight.

For sites near homes or other properties, examine the site boundary and the direction of the fixtures. Share known restrictions and required operating hours early. The final criteria should come from the project owner and applicable authorities or sporting requirements.

Coordinate the complete project

Lighting calculations are one part of a field or court upgrade. Poles, foundations, wiring, access, and controls need their own planning. Structural and electrical design should be handled by the appropriate qualified professionals.

LightExpert can discuss fixture selection and photometric planning for projects ranging from a backyard sport court to larger facilities. Bring the site plan, current pole information, and intended use so the first conversation can be specific.
