Start with the field geometry
Provide base paths, pitching area, foul lines, outfield fence distances and any movable fences. A baseball layout is not interchangeable with a softball field or a multi-field complex.
Account for the ball in flight
Evaluate player viewing directions, including the pitcher/batter relationship and high balls into the outfield. Pole location and aiming need attention at these sightlines, not only on the horizontal field grid.
Review the edge of the venue
Identify dugouts, spectator paths and nearby properties. Define separate areas and operating modes instead of allowing field lighting to become the only source for every support area.
Common questions
Can we light only the infield?
Define the intended activity carefully. A practice area and a field used for complete games have different scopes; review the full path of play before excluding the outfield.
