LED retrofit planning

A good retrofit starts with what is already there—and what you want to improve. Compare light quality, installation needs, and operating costs together.

Document the existing installation

List the fixture types, quantities, mounting heights, and operating hours. Record recurring problems such as dark areas, frequent maintenance, or glare. Changes in how a space is used may matter as much as the age of the equipment.

Photos and a marked-up plan help connect that inventory to the site. Note the supply voltage and existing controls, then have electrical and installation details verified by the project electrician.

Compare performance rather than replacement wattage

A lower input wattage can reduce energy use, but it does not establish how the replacement will light the space. Review output, distribution, mounting conditions, and the proposed layout. Consider whether a full fixture replacement or another approach best suits the installation.

Calculate any energy estimate from the actual old and new system input power, operating hours, and electricity rate. Maintenance assumptions and controls can affect a broader cost comparison. Treat estimates as project-specific, not a universal savings promise.

Plan the transition

Confirm the equipment specification, installation sequence, and how the business will operate during the work. Check control compatibility before ordering. If new fixtures change the distribution of light, review the layout rather than assuming the old positions will produce the same result.

LightExpert can help you organize the lighting questions and compare options. Bring the existing fixture information and your objectives so the review begins with the conditions on your site.

Common questions

Can you estimate savings before a site visit?

An initial estimate may be possible from a reliable equipment inventory and operating assumptions. Its accuracy depends on those inputs.

Should every fixture be replaced one-for-one?

Not automatically. Review the coverage and current use of the space before settling on fixture quantities and locations.
