Glare, spill light & shielding

Understand which problem you are trying to solve before specifying more output or a shield.

Distinguish discomfort from light outside the site

Glare concerns the viewing experience of a bright source. Spill concerns light reaching an unintended area. Either can need attention even when the average within the site looks acceptable.

Map the important viewpoints

Include players, pedestrians, drivers and neighboring windows. Their viewing directions help explain why a comfortable layout for one person may be difficult for another.

Use the manufacturer’s tested configuration

A shield or optic changes the distribution. Confirm the appropriate photometric data and compatibility rather than assuming a shield leaves the original calculation unchanged.

Review controls as part of the solution

Hours, dimming modes and shutoff schedules matter. Document which operating state applies to each calculation and discuss the applicable local requirements.
