IES Files & Fixture Configurations

Learn which fixture details must match an IES file before a photometric calculation can support a lighting decision.

An IES file describes distribution, not the whole project

An IES photometric file describes how a tested or modeled luminaire distributes light. It does not establish pole locations, site dimensions, applicable project criteria, structural adequacy or electrical compliance. Treat it as one input to a calculation rather than a finished lighting design.

Match the exact configuration

Record the model, optic, wattage or output setting, mounting orientation and any shields or accessories. A family name alone is not enough when the product is available with several optical distributions. If a file represents a different configuration, ask the supplier for the matching data or an explanation of the permitted adjustment.

Document assumptions before comparing results

Record mounting heights, aiming, calculation planes, obstructions and maintenance assumptions with the file revision. Compare alternatives on the same site geometry and calculation settings. Otherwise, a difference in reported average illuminance may reflect changed assumptions rather than a better fixture.

What to send for review

Provide the original IES files, corresponding specification sheets, site plan, fixture schedule and the project criteria you received. Identify uncertain measurements and unresolved fixture options. Keep the calculation file and a readable results report together so the assumptions can be traced when the project changes.
